Beluga Whales of Churchill

White Whales and Prairie Tales

3 - 13 August, 2008

Summer in Canada's prairie province of Manitoba offers a wealth of unique experiences for both wildlife observation and interaction with local residents.  Our outings features a very special whale watching opportunity: mingling with over 2000 beluga whales which summer in the Churchill River where it meets Hudson Bay.  Frequently called "sea canaries," the Belugas are extremely vocal, so much so that they can be heard from the bluffs overlooking the river.  Other wildlife is found in the tundra near Churchill, including a wide range of migratory birds, plus other native wildlife such as Arctic Foxes, Snowshoe Hares, caribou, Snowy Owls, Ptarmigan and the occasional polar bear.

The opportunity to meet local residents is one of the joys of travel, and on our Manitoba visit you'll have the opportunity to meet folks from a variety of occupations and ethnic groups:  an Icelandic fisherman on Lake Winnipeg; a prairie grain farmer; Hutterites in their communal colony, Métis and French-Canadians.  We'll experience the food, music, and culture of several ethnic groups who make their home on the Canadian prairie.
