WINTER RAIL ESCAPADE
24 February to 5 March, 2009 Originates in Los Angeles. Take a mid-winter circle rail excursion through 6 Western States. Includes excursions on four private railroads in addition to three Amtrak trains. Visit Santa Fe, Colorado's Royal Gorge, Colorado Springs, and Yosemite National Park. Ride the rails through the heart of the Colorado Rockies, and through the Sierra's via Donner Pass. Highlights: • Two ways to Santa Fe. Ride the New Mexico Rail Runner over a brand new rail line into Santa Fe, and also the original Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe line to Santa Fe. • Enjoy views of the spectacular Royal Gorge from the panoramic vista dome car. • Visit Yosemite National Park, enjoying winter views and luncheon at the famed Ahwahnee Hotel. • Ride the Swiss-designed Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the summit of Pike's Peak. • Ride the California Zephyr over the former Rio Grande line through the heart of the Rockies, a day-long procession of scenic canyons carved by the Colorado River, alternating with high alpine parks or valleys. • Follow the route of the first transcontinental railroad through the Sierras, a route carved by hand by Chinese coolies nearly 150 years ago. • Sample spring as we follow the Fresno County blossom trail through miles of flowering almond and apricot orchards. • Enjoy the vistas of the American West as we travel Amtrak aboard the Southwest Chief and California Zephyr. Sleeping car accommodations are provided on both trains. Fare is based on type of sleeping car accommodations on Amtrak trains From Los Angeles and return from $1895. Single occupancy hotel accommodation available at additional charge.
